Start of motion and gear shifting

In a driver's foot well there should be no extraneous subjects, capable to limit freedom of moving of pedals! When using supernumerary rugs or mats it is necessary to provide a sufficient course of pedals.

Full load of the engine should be given only after its preliminary warming up to normal working temperature which during movement occurs quickly enough.

At a troganiye from a place on a slippery paving avoid a long provorachivaniye any of driving wheels as it can lead to damage of the power unit.

Models with RKPP

The scheme of gear shifting is put on a face surface of the handle of the lever of gear shifting.

Gear shifting during movement make according to technical characteristics of transmission, - try not to allow excessive increase of turns. The table of high-speed modes of gear shifting is provided in Specifications to the present Chapter.

Inclusion of transfer of a backing should be made only after a full stop of the car, - before inclusion the handle of the lever should be pulled up.

At movement on a slippery paving it is not necessary to make braking by transmission as it can lead to loss of coupling of wheels with the road! Remember that braking by the engine is always connected with the sharp increase of its turns fraught with serious internal damages of the power unit.

Models with AT

Gear shifting during movement of the car is made automatically depending on position of the lever of the AT selector, position of the switch of programs, the provision of a pedal of an accelerator and the current speed of movement.

Switchings of automatic transmission automatically adapt for an individual manner of driving, at the expense of correction of the moments of gear shifting. Process of adaptation goes continuously taking into account the current values of working parameters of the power unit, movement characteristics, and also actions of the driver. To change of characteristics of movement AT reacts the adapted program of gear shifting.

Before a start of motion squeeze out a pedal of a foot brake for removal of blocking of the lever of the AT selector, then release the parking brake (see. The section car Parking) also switch the selector lever in one of movement provisions. Wait complete inclusion of transfer, in particular at the cold engine, then release a foot brake and squeeze out a gas pedal.

Remember that before final warming up of the engine gear shifting is made at slightly raised turns that provides the accelerated warming up of the catalytic converter to normal working temperature.

At movement it is necessary to mean that the easy pressing a pedal of gas provides earlier switching of transmission on an overgear while by strong pressing of switching occur later.

Squeezing of a pedal of gas to a floor leads to automatic switching of AT on a low gear (kickdown mode), providing the car the increased dynamic qualities. At an otpuskaniye of a pedal there is a transmission return on higher transfer answering to characteristics of the current high-speed mode.

At a stop leave the selector lever in the provision of movement and by means of the foot or parking brake insure the car from advance, on lifting - from a skatyvaniye back.

When maneuvering in limited space regulate speed of movement by a gradual otpuskaniye of a foot brake. Press an accelerator pedal only slightly and do not play it.

Towage of the trailer should be made in the AT standard mode, - transfer the switch of modes to the left of the selector lever to the situation "S".

Positions of the lever of the AT selector

At movement on a slippery paving it is not necessary to make braking by transmission at the expense of transfer of the lever of the selector to modes of limited ranges of "D2" and «D1» as it can lead to loss of coupling of wheels with the road! Remember that braking by the engine is always connected with the sharp increase of its turns fraught with serious internal damages of the power unit.

The lever of the selector of ranges of transmission can be in one of seven fixed provisions. Start of the engine is possible only in the positions "P" or "N" of the lever. If the stop is made, when AT is in one of movement "D4", "D3", "D2", "D1", "R" ranges, or «N», is necessary to release completely a pedal of gas and to squeeze out a brake pedal for reliable braking of the car.

When switching AT move the lever along a directing groove. At key extraction from the ignition lock the lever of the selector is blocked in the situation "R". In this case the lever conclusion from the situation "R" is impossible even when squeezing a brake pedal. In order to avoid breakage of AT transfer the lever to the situation "R" only after a full stop of the car.

Key extraction from the lock of ignition becomes possible only after transfer of the lever of the selector to the situation "R" and an otpuskaniye of a pedal of a foot brake.

Situation "R"

In this position of the lever of the selector the blocking of the transmission providing additional protection of the parked car is made. Always transfer the selector lever to the situation "R" at switching off or engine start. To deduce the lever of the selector of ranges from the situation "R", it is necessary to squeeze out a brake pedal, previously having released a gas pedal. Reject the selector lever to the right and deduce it from the situation "R".

Situation "R"

Receptions of management by the lever of the selector of ranges at its transfer from the situation "R" in the situation "R" (Backing) are described above. Turning on of the lever in the situation "R" from the situation "N" (Neutral) make only after a full stop of the car. If the backing does not join after a full stop of the car, squeeze out a pedal of a foot brake and slowly move the selector lever at first to the situation "N", then in the situation "R".

Situation "N"

Use the situation "N" (Neutral) at start of the decayed engine under way and at short stops of the car with working engine. If for any reason it is necessary for you to depart from the car, previously transfer the lever of the selector of ranges to the situation "R". At a lever conclusion of the situation "N" squeeze out a pedal of a foot brake.



Transfer of transmission to the situation "N" during movement is connected with risk of serious internal damages! Use this situation only at threat of drift of the car at movement on a slippery paving.

Situation "D4"

In this situation the lever of the selector of ranges should be constantly at car movement in normal road conditions.

In a range «D4» (Movement) is provided automatic gear shifting of a forward course depending on speed of the car and extent of squeezing of a pedal of gas.

Situation "D3"

If the lever of the selector of ranges is included in the provision "D3", the automatic transmission functions similar to a case of inclusion of a range «D4» (Movement).

Difference consists that transition to the fourth transfer is excluded. The range of "D3" is recommended to be used at trailer towage in the hilly district or for implementation of braking by the engine on descent of a considerable steepness. Inclusion of a range of "D3" is useful also for an exception of superfluous cyclic switchings of automatic transmission between the third and fourth transfers, - similar cyclic switchings of a transmission can be observed, for example, at movement in a dense transport stream with frequent delays and stops.

For sharp dispersal of the car at transmission work in a range of "D4" or «D3» squeeze out a gas pedal against the stop. Thus the transmission will automatically be switched to adjacent lowest transfer (kickdown mode).

If speed of the car is insignificant, switching can occur at once on two steps down.

Situation "D2"

At inclusion of a range of "D2" automatic transmission will constantly work at the second transfer.

At a car stop the transmission does not pass to the first transfer. Continuous inclusion of the second transfer provides good traction dynamics of the car on liftings and possibility of intensive braking with the engine on abrupt descents.

The range of "D2" can be used as alternative to a winter mode (to W, - see below) at a start of motion on a slippery paving, and also at movement on deep snow. It helps to prevent strong pro-slipping of driving wheels of the car.

It is recommended to use «D2» range at movement on abrupt passes, at trailer towage in the hilly district, and also for braking by the engine on especially abrupt descents.

At inclusion of a range «2» under way the car activation of the second transfer to transmissions automatically is late and occurs only after speed of the car will decrease to safe level on which frequency of rotation of a cranked shaft of the engine will not exceed the most admissible value.

Situation "D1"

At inclusion of a range of "D1" automatic transmission will constantly work at the first transfer.

If inclusion of a range of "D1" is made for the speed more than 50 km/h, transmission at first will be switched to the second transfer. Inclusion of an intermediate step allows to exclude sharp and unexpected braking by the engine.

The mode can be used at movement with the trailer on especially abrupt descents and long passes.

Switching of modes of functioning of AT

The switch of modes of functioning of AT is at the left the lever of the selector of transfers and is designated by "W" and «S» letters.

Standard mode "S"

The standard mode is activated in the position "S" of the switch and is intended for movement in normal road conditions.

Winter mode "W"

For transition to a winter mode of functioning of AT it is necessary to press the switch section "W".

In a winter mode the car troganiye from a place is made on the second transfer - except for movement with full loading or in the position "D1" of the lever of the AT selector.

Switching of transmission is made by strong pressing of a pedal of an accelerator at lower speed of movement smaller number of turns of the engine, than in the situation "S".

The transfer relation of transfer of a backing in the situation "W" decreases.

Emergency operation

Deterioration of dynamic characteristics and refusal of transmission of switchings testify to transition of transmission to emergency operation of functioning. The probability of switching on the 2nd transfer or backing transfer is not excluded.

In a similar situation it is necessary to stop movement, to park in a safe place, to transfer the selector lever to the situation "R" and to muffle the engine.

Having waited for not less than 10 seconds, again start the engine and transfer the selector lever to situation "D" - the 2nd transfer will join. Transfer of the lever to the situation "R" leads to inclusion of transfer of a backing.

The car should be driven away immediately on the next car repair shop Mercedes-Benz for carrying out detailed diagnostics of AT and performance of necessary regenerative repair.
